Historical Equity Drawdown Calculator

Find the largest observed fall from a running equity peak.

Your inputsBrowser calculationCSV export

A hypothetical sequence of 1,000, 1,200, 900, 1,100 and 1,250 USD first peaks at 1,200. The fall to 900 is 300 divided by 1,200, or 25%. The last point establishes a new 1,250 peak, so current drawdown is 0% while maximum observed drawdown remains 25%.

What this helps you check

Drawdown depends on the path, not just the first and last balance. This calculator follows a chronological equity series, tracks its running peak and measures each decline from that peak. It reports both the largest historical drawdown and the final observation's drawdown.

The maximum is bounded by the observations you provide. Missing intraday points may hide a deeper decline. A later recovery in this historical file is a past observation, not evidence of future recovery or a forecast of the next losing streak.

No account connection required

Inputs are processed in your browser by this calculator. There is no quote lookup or file upload for the calculation. Site measurement and consent are handled separately by the site's privacy and consent controls.

CSV schema: timestamp (iso8601), equity (number). Header required; comma delimiter. Numeric fields use decimal points. Timestamps require Z or a numeric UTC offset. The original input remains unchanged.

Comma-separated CSV with a header. Maximum 500 rows and 200,000 characters.

Interactive calculation requires JavaScript. The method and hypothetical worked example below remain readable.

The example is invented to demonstrate the method. It is not a current market quote, a provider's fee schedule or verified trading performance.

How the worksheet works

  1. Require strictly chronological distinct timestamps, equity>=0, and a positive initial equity.
  2. running_peak[i]=max(equity[0..i]).
  3. drawdown_pct[i]=100*(running_peak[i]-equity[i])/running_peak[i].
  4. Maximum drawdown is the largest row drawdown; current drawdown is the final row's drawdown.

The maximum is bounded by the observations you provide. Missing intraday points may hide a deeper decline. A later recovery in this historical file is a past observation, not evidence of future recovery or a forecast of the next losing streak.

Boundaries to keep in view

  • External deposits/withdrawals must be absent or already adjusted by the user.
  • A cash injection must not be interpreted as return or drawdown recovery.
  • No annual return, probability of ruin or future drawdown forecast.

Compare resources for this task

An equity-curve review needs a defined series and clear cash-flow treatment. Journals may offer their own analysis, while spreadsheet tools let you inspect the running-peak arithmetic and the exact observations used.
